Adipose Tissue, Bone and Cartilage

Objectives:

After the completion of this lab session, students will be able to

1. Correlate the adipose connective (CT) tissue to its appropriate mature CT classification.

2. Identify cartilage among other connective tissues.

3. Differentiate between hyaline, elastic and fibrocartilage based on the arrangement of cells, type of fibers present and the nature of their ground substance.

4. Mention the sites of distribution of various types of cartilage.

5. Enumerate the components and the structural entities that make up dense and cancellous bones.

6. Describe endochondral and intramembranous bone formation, the epiphyseal growth plate, and the key functions of the periosteum.

7. Describe the formation, structure, and specific functions of the osteoblasts, osteoclasts, chondroblasts and chondroclasts.

8. Explain the functions of the osseous system, including its contribution in the maintenance of the blood calcium.

9. Differentiate between cartilage and bone tissues from both, the histological and the functional perspectives.
